Weather alert issued for SW Iceland: Dangerous winds between Reykjavík, Keflavík Airport

An Orange Weather Alert is in effect for the region around Faxaflói bay in West Iceland. The storm is expected to peak in the afternoon and early evening, between 16:30 and 19:30 today, Thursday. The area affected includes the northern part of Reykjanes peninsula, the Capital Region and the Ring Road in West Iceland.

A severe gale with sustained windspeeds in excess of 25 m/s (56 mph) is expected in the region. Individual wind gusts can easily reach hurricane force, topping 35 m/s (78 mph). The Icelandic Meteorological Office expects a southeasterly severe gale with windspeeds of 18-25 m/s (40-56 mph): 

"Travel disruption is expected and potentially damaging winds".

The Orange Weather Alert is in effect from 16:30 in the afternoon until 19:30 and includes the Capital Region and the road to Keflavík Airport. The windspeed on the road to Keflavík is expected to top 35 m/s (78 mph). Winds of this magnitude can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles, even blow cars off the road.

Weather Alerts for South and SE Iceland

A Yellow Weather Alert is in effect for South Iceland. Severe gale with strong windgusts near mountains. The IMO warns travellers to be cautious. 

The most dangerous winds in the south can be expected along the Eyjafjöll mountain range in the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull glacier, east of Seljalandsfoss waterfall, as well as in the region around the town of Vík. The weather alert in the south is in effect from 16:30 this afternoon until 21:00 in the evening.

An Orange Weather Alert is in effect for South East and East Iceland, effective from 19:00 today, Thursday 21:00 or 23:00 tomorrow evening, Friday. Strong south-easterly winds and heavy rain, considerable flooding is expected in rivers and springs, especially in the area east of Öræfajökull glacier.

Yellow Weather alerts are in effect for the rest of the country, including all of North Iceland. Travellers are asked to show caution as a severe gale with strong gales passes over tonight.
