Why the constant earthquakes? Iceland is slowly being torn apart
Travellers are adviced to show caution when driving today: The ring-road is covered in icy and very slick patches or snow. Drivers are advised to show extra caution when crossing heaths.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration warns that the ring-road on Hellisheiði heath, between Reykjavík and South Iceland, is very icy. Holtavörðuheiði, between West Iceland and the north is similarly icy, with snow showers which reduce visibility. Most roads in North Iceland are covered in snow, and visibility is low in many parts because of blowing snow or blizzard. Driving conditions in East Iceland are also difficult due to ice, snow and low visibility due to blizzards.
Two of the roads connecting Egilsstaðir town to South East Iceland are closed: Breiðdalsheiði heath and Öxi heath are both impassable and have been closed The road along the coast is open.
You can find Hellisheiði, Holtavörðuheiði, Breiðdalsheiði and Öxi on the map below.
