Smoking among grammar school students in Iceland has fallen to an all-time low according to a new study published this week.
Ársæll Már Anarsson, professor at the University of Akureyri, lead the study. In an interview with Fréttablaðið newspaper he says the change happened rapidly, only twenty years ago around 25 % of 15-year-olds smoked.

“With this rate, one can hope that this age group will be completely smoke-free.” Ársæll adds: “The results show us that anti-smoking campaigns seem to work.”

Kristján Þór Júlíusson, Minister of Health, is happy with the results. “We hope the results are a clear indication to this age-group’s increasingly healthy lifestyle.”
