The first cruise ship of the year will dock in Reykjavík on May 14. The five month cruise ship season is expected to bring 129,000 passengers to Reykjavík on board 155 different cruise ships. Last year 113 cruise ships visited Reykjavík, carrying 99,000 passengers. The increase is 30%.

A spokesman for the Reykjavík harbour told the local news site Túristi that harbour authorities ensure that the number of cruise ship passengers in Reykjavík never tops 5-6,000 at any given time. The goal is to ensure that harbour infrastructure is not overextended. Most of the ships stop only a short time in Reykjavík, spending one day in the capital before heading out.

Most of the cruise ship passengers visiting Iceland last year come from Germany (30.488), followed by the US (21,243) and the UK (19.893).
