  • The Aurora over Kleifarvatn lake Early yesterday evening the magnificient Northern Lights came on, treating us to one of nature's greatest shows! Photo/Maksym Gryschenko.

Yesterday we were hit by a moderate geomagnetic storm, causing a particularly spectacular Northern Lights in the northern hemisphere. The According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office the Aurora activity in Iceland was "strong", or 7 on the 1-9 scale. Thanks to clear skies over most of Iceland we were treated to a spectacular show throughout the night and early morning.

A magnificent all-night show
The Aurora started almost immediately after dark, and was clearly visible from Reykjavík. Of course the Aurora is more vibrant where you can view it without any light pollution, but on nights like yesterday the strength of the Aurora is such that not even all the streetlights of Reykjavík manage to dampen its beauty!

But for the really great photos of the Northern Lights you want to head out of town. Maksym Gryshchenko, an Ukrainian photographer who lives in Iceland, drove to Kleifarvatn lake on the Reykjanes peninsula, where he captured the following pictures of the Aurora. You can check out Maksym's work at his website infocus.is.

Maksym told Iceland Magazine that all the photos were taken between 21:30 and 22:30.

Tonight could be just as amazing
If you missed yesterday's dramatic show you need not worry. Tonight's Aurora forecast is also really good: An activity index of 6, promises powerful activity. The main problem might be the sky cover, but after midnight and early morning the skies over Western and South Western Iceland should be only partially cloudy, offering great opportunities to capture the Aurora!
