The Blue Lagoon, one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations, has been drained as plans to expand the lagoon and its facilities are underway. The lagoon will reopen on 22 January.

A ground breaking ceremony took place in December 2014 and marked the launch of the construction of a of a new 10.000 square metre (107639 square feet) luxury hotel and leisure centre, built into the lava west of the lagoon. The project is expected to be completed in in 2017.

Sigríður Sigþórsdóttir of Basalt Architects is the project’s lead architect. She has worked with Blue Lagoon for almost two decades and designed all of the lagoon’s facilities.
