Iceland is a popular wedding destination for same-sex couples

According to Gay Iceland the country has been a popular destination for gay weddings, with many international couples opting to marry according to Ásatrú, the old, Norse belief.

“There has been a massive increase in demand for same-sex wedding ceremonies in the last year, an explosion really,” says Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, high chieftain of Ásatrúarfélagið. “The pagan belief is very inclusive and we welcome all; gay and straight, Icelandic and foreign.”

The Icelandic Ethical Humanist Association, Siðmennt, also marries same-sex couples. Svanur Sigurbjörnsson, who oversees all ceremonies conducted by Siðmennt, estimates that the association married around 20 same-sex couples last year.
