Christmas beer sales in Iceland have increased by a whopping 5,850 percent since 1989, when the ban on beer was lifted, reports Mbl.is.

According to beer connoisseur and historian Stefán Pálsson the tradition of brewing special Christmas beer traces all the way back to the Viking era. Stefán says he’s happy to see Icelanders staying true to old customs by drinking Christmas beer instead of mulled wine.
