The Blue Lagoon has become one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations. In fact, it has become so popular that guests are advised to purchase their tickets in advance through the lagoon’s website to ensure entry, especially during the day time.

The lagoon’s facilities counts 750 lockers, however, attendance in February has exceeded that number daily, resulting in guests being turned away.

More than 700 thousand guests visited the lagoon last year, making it Iceland’s most popular tourist attraction.

The lagoon was formed in 1976 when the Svartsengi (Black Field) power plant was built. Shortly after, locals began to bathe in the pale blue water and noticed that it greatly affected one’s skin.
