Best of West Iceland August 8–15

Danish inspired town festival
Danskir dagar (Danish Days) is the name of an annual town festival in Stykkishólmur, West Iceland, starting on August 15th. The festival celebrates the town‘s Danish roots and this is the 20th time it takes place. Including the many activities taking place all over the town during that weekend are a car-boot sale, concerts and a family show with Jón Arnór, a seven year old magician who gained much attention after reaching the finals in Iceland‘s Got Talent.

Music in Akranes Church
The Minua Trio consists of Kristinn Smári Kristinsson, Luca Pusch, who play guitar, and Fabian Willmann who plays bass clarinet. The trio will perform in Akranes Church on Tuesday August 12th at 8 pm.

A celebration of poet Hallgrímur Pétursson
Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614 – October 27, 1674) was a minister and one of Iceland’s most famous poets. This year marks the 400th anniversary of his death and the famous poet will be honoured with a day of activities in Saurbær, Hvalfjarðarströnd, including mass at 1.30 pm, open discussions, and concerts.

Swim, swim, swim
Take a dip in the Sælingsdalur swimming pool or in Guðrún’s pool, a small stacked stone pool, located in Sælingsdalur valley, West Iceland.  The Dalir museum is also located nearby.

Hnúksnes Festival
The family run Hnúksnes Festival takes place Saturday August 9th between 4 pm and 10 pm. Among the activities scheduled to take place is a boot-throwing competition, concerts, seashell painting and an old fashioned accordion dance. It is possible to camp out next to the Hnúksnes farm.
