This is the East Iceland section of Best of Iceland This Week, the only Icelandic guide of its kind. New every week.

Hulda Guðnadóttir  lives in the town of Reyðarfjörður fjord.  She is an elementary school teacher during the winter and tour guide during summer. Here are her recommendations for East Iceland this week.

What is your favourite restaurant in the area

“Kaupfélagsbarinn in Norðfjörður and Guesthouse Egilsstaðir. The best place to get coffee and baked goods is the local bakery Sesam brauðhús.”

Describe the perfect Sunday drive from Reyðarfjörður
“I love driving out to the deserted farm Eyri in Reyðarfjörður and walking down to the shore.”

Mention three things people should absolutely not miss when visiting East Iceland

1) “Go to the former Iceland spar mine Helgustaðanámur (but don’t take the Iceland spar with you, it’s protected!)

2) “Take a walk around the town of Fáskrúðsfjörður and visit the French hospital and museum. All the town’s street names are in Icelandic and French, in memory of the French fishermen who used to fish around the coasts of Iceland.

3) “Drive to Mjóifjörður (which translates to Narrow Fjord) and take in the beautiful scenery.”
