The Reykjavík Winter Lights Festival takes place all over the Greater Capital Area between the 4 and 7 February. The aim is to illuminate the darkness of winter with a selection of cultural events for all ages. All events are free.

The festival opens Thursday when a magnificent outdoor light installation is unveiled on Harpa Concert Hall’s exterior.

Last year, Harpa, Studio Ólafur Elíasson and Visit Reykjavík urged artists to send in proposals how to utilise the building’s façade. Halldór Eldjárn and Þórður Hans Baldursson’s proposal, titled The Paint Splatter, was selected and will be unveiled on Thursday evening at 7.30 pm.

On Saturday, 6 February, Swimming Pool Night takes place in 10 of Reykjavík’s largest pools. The event begins at 4 pm and ends at midnight and includes happenings such as water yoga, light installations, live music and poetry reading. Find out more here
